Future of Church Safeguarding

The Future of Church Safeguarding Programme has been set up to recommend a model for fully independent safeguarding within the Church of England. As part of the programme, the team will be gathering a range of views to help understand what needs to be improved, or what is already working well in the safeguarding processes. They also want to hear opinions about how to achieve a safeguarding body that is independent, fair and impartial. The programme operates entirely independently from the Church, and is being led by Professor Alexis Jay OBE, who previously chaired the Indpendant Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). She expects to complete her report for The Archbishops of Canterbury and York by the end of December, and will be publishing the report to ensure full transparency.

This Is My Story

"This Is My Story" is a photographic exhibition telling people's faith stories. Each of the 18 panels provides an opportunity for us to learn about that person, how they came to faith and how it has helped in their lives. The exhibition shows real people living in Devon today, with a real faith, and will encourage us to think about our own lives and beliefs.

The exhibition will be at:

  • St James', Teignmouth from 8th until 22nd July 2023
  • St John's, Bishopsteignton from 24th July until 7th August

Support in Bereavement

Recovering from the death of someone we love, often means trying to make sense of a world turned upside down.

Coping with grief is exhausting, painful and can be lonely. We may not wish to share with family members for fear of upsetting them. It takes time to regain our bearings, to see that life can be good again, although changed.

We can help by offering support through:

  • Telephone befriending
  • Working in a group with others who have been bereaved
  • Meeting you in a local cafe for a chat over a coffee.

If you would like further details do ring the Alice Cross centre on 01626 778039

Reintroduction of the Common Cup in Haldon Mission Community

Following a number of requests from parishioners, the Clergy Team have reintroduced the common cup across the mission community at midnight mass.

Church of England guidance provides for this, and it will be done with careful consideration for covid safety.

It is important to state that reception in one kind, i.e. only taking the bread and not the wine, is regarded as full and complete communion and no-one should feel any pressure to receive in both kinds if they have any concerns about doing so.

  • Bread and wine will both be offered to communicants. Those wishing to receive in one kind may indicate by keeping their hands down or a shake of the head that they prefer not to take the wine, or by returning to their seat straight after receiving the bread.
  • For those who do choose to receive the wine, the chalice will be given a quarter turn between each communicant so that each communicant drinks from a different side. After four communicants the rim of the chalice will be cleaned using fresh communion wine - ie alcohol
  • It will no longer be possible for either the priest or the communicant to intinct (dip the bread into the wine).

We ask everyone to please refrain from taking the common cup if you feel unwell.

If you have any comments, concerns or other feedback about this decision, please speak to a member of the ministry team or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
